Kids Reading Book in Park

Our Program

A Winning Combination

Each 75-minute class is split between interactive storytelling using the Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) method and authentic play interactions where students are immersed in the language using Comprehensible Input (CI).  *Please see links at the bottom for more information about these methods!* Our primary focus during storytelling and discussion is the key phrase for the lesson, one of the Super Siete, the seven most common verb phrases in the Spanish language.

The Super Siete include:

  1. está (is at a place / is feeling)

  2. hay (there is / there are)

  3. tiene (has)

  4. es (is)

  5. le gusta (likes / is pleasing to)

  6. va (goes / is going)

  7. quiere (wants)

What we do:

  • Explore activities and stories where new words are learned organically

  • Have authentic interactions in a foreign language

  • Practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a variety of fun activities

  • Integrate student interests and experiences into every lesson

  • Use pictures, videos, sounds, smells, and tastes to reinforce meaning

  • Spiral our curriculum so students can continue to build on their Spanish knowledge in every lesson

  • Learn new things every lesson

What we don’t do:

  • Memorize lists of vocabulary

  • Sit still and listen to the teacher say words we don’t understand

  • Practice the same skills over and over in the same way

  • Use a textbook

Further Research

Speaking Their Language: Students interested in learning a new language or improving their English thrive when labs are transformed into active learning spaces

Research on how students are more engaged in language learning when it is made interactive - evidence for best practice-status of TPR, TPRS, and gamification.
